Donald "Bart" Barthelemy, 79, of Wakefield, passed away Thursday morning, December 22, at Kindred Rehab, Peabody, surrounded by his loving family.

Bart was born in Somerville on September 2, 1932 and raised in Middleton with 12 brothers and sisters.

At the age of 17 Bart joined the US Army and was deployed with The First Division (The Big Red 1). He later transferred to the Army Security Agency and graduated from the US Army Intelligence School at Fort Holabird, MD in 1957. He then served in Germany (during the building of the Berlin Wall), Korea, Okinawa, and NSA at Fort Meade, MD and taught intelligence at Fort Devens, MA, retiring in 1971.

In 1976 Bart began his second career…in ice cream! Bart and his son Don opened the doors to Meletharb Homemade Ice Cream in Wakefield, Ma. They worked sided by side making ice cream by hand in the back of the store for over 35 years. Bart touched the lives of generations of customers and employees that have passed through the doors of the store for the past three and a half decades.

In 1996 Bart began the study of Reiki (energy healing) and enjoyed yet another career as a Certified Reiki Master/Teacher at a clinic in Wakefield and surrounding towns.

Bart was an active member in his community who loved children and over the years contributed his time and passion as a Little League coach, a Boy Scout Leader, as well as a volunteer reader for Read Across America in local elementary schools. Bart was a Life Member of the VFW, The American Legion, and the Retired/Enlisted Association. He also studied Graphoanalysis and was a member of the International Graphoanalysis Society as well as the International Association of Reiki Practitioners and the International Association of Integrative Medicine. In 1999 Bart was voted Wakefield Elk's Man of the Year for his charitable service to the community.

Bart was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Audrey Barthelemy (Towne), their son Donald Barthelemy Jr., and granddaughter Kate Campbell, as well as Donald Jr.'s partner Jill Parkin and her daughters Rachel and Susannah Parkin. Bart was also a loving brother to: Margaret, Lawrence, Dorothy, Joan, Clara, Arlene, Sandra, Raymond, and Robert; deceased are Walter, Charles and Alfred.

A visitation for relatives and friends will be held at McDonald Funeral Home, 19 Yale Ave., Wakefield on Tuesday Dec 27 from 4-7pm, followed by a Service of Remembrance beginning at 7pm.

In lieu of flowers a contribution may be made to the Donald E. Barthelemy Scholarship Fund, care of Wakefield CSF, PO Box 321, Wakefield, MA 01880.
