BLOUT, Alexandra (MacKay) “Sandra” of Melrose, 89, passed away at home following a brief illness on October 30, 2026. The daughter of the late James and Julia (MacNaught) MacKay of Stoneham, and later, Prince Edward Island, Canada, Sandra is preceded in death by Henry, her devoted husband of 58 years. She is survived by her brother James MacKay and his partner Tom of Concord, NH, son James and his wife Angie, daughter Margie, son Jeffrey and his partner Tatyana, and son John. To her adoring granddaughters, Ashley and Hannah, she will forever be affectionately known as “Bacca”, and to her nieces and nephews, Auntie Sandy. Sandra was born on June 19, 1937. She grew up in Stoneham and graduated from Stoneham High School in 1954, followed by two years at the Lawrence Memorial School of Nursing. Being a registered nurse was one of Sandra’s proudest achievements and she remained closely connected to her classmates for the rest of her life. Sandra married Henry in 1958. In 1960, they started their family and Sandra took a break from nursing to raise their four children. She returned to nursing several years later – never missing her refresher courses – as an in-home health evaluator for John Hancock Insurance. In retirement, Sandra’s passions included tropical vacations with Henry and extended stays at the family cabin on Thompson Lake in Maine as well as frequent trips to local libraries to check off titles on her long list of books she would read. Her hobbies included gardening, knitting, going to the theater, keeping in touch with her many longtime friends and assembling jigsaw puzzles with her grandchildren. A dedicated member of St James Methodist Church of Stoneham, several of Sandra’s fellow parishioners became lifelong friends. Young at heart and generous of spirit, Sandra’s life was one of meaningful relationships and self-sacrifice. To her family and others who loved her she leaves a legacy of strength, service and the power of togetherness.
Visitation for relatives and friends will be held at the McDonald-Finnegan-Anderson Funeral Home, 322 Main St., Stoneham on Tuesday, November 3 from 4-7pm. Her Funeral Service will be held in the Funeral Home on Wednesday, November 4 at 11am. Interment to follow at Lindenwood Cemetery in Stoneham.
