Charles H. “Chuck” Carroll, age 86, of Wakefield, passed away on Tuesday, November 3, at his residence.
Born in Chelsea on October 23, 1940, Chuck was the son of the late Daniel and Eleanor (Hubner) Carroll. A proud graduate of Boston College High School, Class of 1958, he went on to devote 58 years of service to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Division of Standards, retiring as its Director.
Above all, Chuck held a deep love for his family. He led with humor and steady guidance, and he loved deeply and was deeply loved in return.
He was the beloved husband of June (Botte) Carroll for 65 years. He was the loving father of Danna Carroll of Rockport; Charles H. Carroll, Jr. of Boynton Beach, Florida; John, A.k.A Jay Carroll and his wife, Patty, of Beverly; and Lisa Marchelletta and her husband, Frank, of Tewksbury. He was the brother of Daniel Carroll of Wilmington, North Carolina; Michael Carroll of Crossville, Tennessee; David Carroll of New Hampton, New Hampshire; Rosella DeBowe of St. Augustine, Florida; and the late Martha (Carroll) Phillips. Chuck is also survived by his grandchildren, Michael, Patrick, and Katherine Carroll, and Alyssa and Vincent Marchelletta, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Chuck will be remembered for his dedication to his family, friends, and colleagues. He was a trusted source of advice and a voice of reason for those who turned to him. Along with his sage advice, Chuck brought humor and a sense of adventure to life. At family gatherings, he was always the life of the party, telling jokes and teasing the kids.
Growing up in Chelsea, Chuck enjoyed many sports, but baseball held a special place in his heart. He finished his brief baseball career as a catcher for semi-pro teams in Chelsea and Reading before embracing golf. He enjoyed more than 30 years as a member of Gannon Golf Club in Lynn and was also a member of LaPlaya Golf Club in Naples, Florida. Along the way, Chuck achieved four holes-in-one, a joy many golfers never experienced even once. His first came during a three-day tournament at Vesper Country Club, leaving his partner with a sizable bill for celebratory drinks. Three more followed, making holes-in-one seem easy for Chuck.
Visitation for relatives and friends will be held at McDonald Funeral Home, 19 Yale Ave., Wakefield, on Sunday, November 8, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.
His Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Joseph Church, 173 Albion St., Wakefield, on Monday, November 9, at 11:30 a.m.
Interment will take place at Lakeside Cemetery in Wakefield.
