Dorothy Ann Deveney, age 86, of Wakefield died Friday May 22 in Melrose.
Dorothy was born in Boston, MA on October 12,1939 and was the daughter of the late Dominic and Dorothy Z. (Sahigian) Giardino. Dorothy was raised in Hyde Park and had been a longtime Wakefield resident and had also been a resident of Kennebunk, ME.
Dorothy was an accomplished educator of more than forty years and was a graduate of Boston State Teacher’s College She had taught in Brockton, Nahant and eventually retired as a Mathematics and Science teacher at the Northeast Regional Vocational School in Wakefield in 2001. During her career she directed talent shows, yearbook development for graduating classes and established the Academically Talented Program, the Northeastern National Honor Society, and the National Vocational Technical School Honor Society at Northeast. She had twice been nominated by her students as National Outstanding Teacher. She was also the Walmart Reading Teacher of the Year. She taught knitting, crafts, sewing and needlepoint at the Northeast Night Adult Education School. During her High School years, she was a cheerleading captain, yearbook and student newspaper editor and a member of the National Honor Society. She represented her high school at the annual Mayor of Boston Banquet. She enjoyed skating and mentored in the Brownie and Girl Scout programs.
Dorothy was the beloved wife of the late John W. Deveney. She was the loving sister of Donald J. Giardino and his wife Frances of Dedham and Lyman, ME, She was the aunt of Nona Therese Stappen Brown and husband Tom, Donald J. Giardino and his partner Lynne, Christine MacPhail and husband Russell. She was the great aunt to Michael, Matthew and Benjamin MacPhail, Nona Lorri Rougier and husband Ken, Colleen Brown, DJ and Nicholas Giardino, and Molly and Hannah Rougier.
Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated in Saint Joseph Church 173 Albion St. Wakefield on Friday May 29 at 11:30 am. Visitation will be held at the McDonald Funeral Home 19 Yale Avenue Wakefield on Thursday May 28 from 4-7pm. Interment will be at Saint Patrick Cemetery in Stoneham.
