Halyburton MacDonald, wife of the late Earl Parker
Macdonald
, and a long time resident of Lynnfield, passed away on February 19, 2009 at the Sawtelle Family Hospice House in Reading. She was 98 years old.
Ernestine
was born in Bridgeport, Connecticut in 1910, the daughter of Harry F. Halyburton and May Phillips. Her early years were spent in Waterford, Connecticut and on the barrier islands off the coast of Currituck, N.C. She began studying the violin at six and played throughout her life. In 1933 she graduated as a Phi Beta Kappa scholar from the Woman's College of the University of North Carolina, and later earned her Master of Library Science degree from Simmons College.
From 1953 – 1969,
Ernestine
worked for the Reading School Library System and served as its Director from 1969 – 1972. Upon retirement, she joined the Lynnfield Public Library as reference librarian. She was also associated with the Lynnfield Centre Congregational Church, and the Lynnfield Historical Society.
She and Earl raised their family in Melrose where they were members of the First Baptist Church. Her two surviving children are Miriam M. Brown of Wenham and David E.

of Gilford, N.H. Five surviving grandchildren include three grandsons, Mark P. Brown and his wife, Maryann of Quincy; Scott D. Brown and his wife, Amber of Hamilton; Jeffrey T.
Macdonald
and his wife, Melissa of Ayer; and two granddaughters, Jennifer E. Griffin of Gloucester, and Sandra
Macdonald
Herman and her husband, David of Pepperell.
Ernestine
is also survived by 10 great grandchildren and several cousins.
Services and burial will be private in the Forest Hill Cemetery, Lynnfield. Memorial contributions may be made to the Lynnfield Library, 18 Summer Street, Lynnfield, MA 01940 or Hallmark Health Hospice, 178 Savin Street, Malden, MA 02148.
