Frank R. Sparco

Frank R. Sparco of Wakefield, formerly of Somerville and the West End Boston, died peacefully on Sunday September 27 at the age of 91.

Frank was born in Boston on April 30, 1935, and was the beloved son of the late Peter and Christine (Mascheri) Sparco.

Frank was predeceased by his beloved wife, Barbara D. Sparco, with whom he shared 62 years of marriage. Before marrying in 1961, Frank proudly served his country as a member of the U.S. Army. When Frank returned from his tour in Europe, they settled in Somerville, where they raised their family.

He was the devoted dad to Donna Sartell and her husband David of Wakefield, Peter Sparco and his wife Ronaine of Stoneham, and Joanne Calandra and her husband Frank of Wakefield. He was the beloved brother to Michael Sparco, Theresa Tynan, and the late Pauline Guarino. Frank was the cherished grandpa of six grandchildren: Dayna Connolly, John Sartell, Francis Sparco, Jonathan Sparco, Stephen Calandra, and Nicole Calandra. He was also great grandpa to Charlie Sartell, Vivienne Sartell, and Camila Connolly.

Frank worked his entire career as a truck driver for Teamsters Local 25. He had an impeccable record, driving tractor trailers all around the Boston area. His most memorable work stories include his instinct to drive his trailer back to the truck yard and reach home before the blizzard of 1978 snarled roadways. During the 1990s, he also drove trucks for movies filmed on location in Boston, including one of the Karate Kid movies.

Frank was a lifelong member of the Dante Club in Somerville. He was an avid poker and pool player and contributing member of the club. He helped organize club events, keep track of finances, and served as President.

Frank was funny, smart, strong, and led with common sense. He could always make you laugh when you needed one, and he enjoyed playing practical jokes or teasing you to lighten the mood. He was always up for a game of cards including cribbage or gin rummy.

Most importantly Frank was a wonderful family man and friend.

Frank was loved very much and will be missed beyond measure.

His Funeral Mass will be held at St. Joseph Church, 173 Albion St., Wakefield on Friday October 2 at 10:00 a.m. Visitation for relatives and friends will be held at the McDonald Funeral Home, 19 Yale Ave., Wakefield on Thursday October 1st from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Interment, St Michaels Cemetery, 500 Canterbury St., Boston.
