Gaetana “Nellie” Mammino, passed away peacefully on May 23, 2026, at the age of 103 at her home. She was born July 8, 1922, in Lawrence, MA.
Nellie’s family moved to Somerville, MA in her early years. She worked as a seamstress in Boston for a short time.
Nellie was known for her “can do” attitude. From a young age she always thought of being practical. She was determined to wear “pants” when out doing chores instead of dresses which was the more accepted attire at the time. She also was one of the first women in her neighborhood to believe driving a car was necessary and got her license as soon as she came of age. She passed on the idea that to achieve something, you must decide what to do, work hard on it, and accept the outcome.
On June 1, 1947, Gaetana married Salvatore Mammino in Lawrence, MA. They made their home in Somerville, then moved to Stoneham, MA. They shared a long loving life together. They raised two children, Raymond and Diane. Gaetana enjoyed being with family and friends, playing cards, telling stories, eating Italian food, especially on the holidays. She loved to go out to dance and celebrate the New Year with friends. Gaetana loved to bowl and was on a bowling league for many years. She always found some way to show her sense of humor and quick wit in conversation. She enjoyed cooking, especially Italian food.
Gaetana was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and brother, and one great grandchild. She is survived by her son Raymond and daughter Diane, five grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild.
The family would like to thank her granddaughter Deana, and great granddaughter Christina for the loving care they gave to “Nana” for many years. Also, they would like to thank the special workers at ABC Home Health Care for their dedication and professionalism in caring for Gaetana.
Visitation for relatives and friends will be held at the McDonald-Finnegan-Anderson Funeral Home, 322 Main St, Stoneham, on Thursday, May 28 from 11am-1pm. There will be a private burial afterwards.
