George Anthony Tierney, 89, of Stoneham, passed away peacefully on Monday, July 14, 2025, at Artis Senior Living in Lexington. Born in Somerville, Massachusetts, he was the beloved son of the late Martin Leo Tierney and Esther Mary (Cahill Tierney) Larkin.
George graduated from Somerville High School in 1954 and proudly earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Fitchburg State University in 1981. He lived a full, joyful life as a devoted father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, mentor, friend, and dedicated professional.
He spent nearly his entire adult life working as a skilled electrician for the MBTA, was a proud member of IBEW Local 103, and mentored countless apprentices throughout his career. Always inventive, George even created his own pipe-bending technique—humorously dubbed “The Little Man Method.”
Known for his remarkable sense of humor, George could often be found laughing so hard at a good joke that tears would roll down his cheeks. He loved talking to people, sharing stories, and making others laugh.
He showed up—for everything. Whether it was a dance recital, sports game, graduation, family party, holiday gathering, or airport pickup, George was there. He often even took a “test drive” to unfamiliar locations the day before an event just to make sure he wouldn’t be late.
George will be fondly remembered for his big heart and love of life’s simple pleasures: his daily uniform of a work shirt and Dickies pants, his sweet tooth—especially for chocolate ice cream and donuts—his goofy dancing at weddings, his willingness to help anyone, and his deep devotion to his mother, his children, his friends, and his beloved rescue dog, Griffin, whom he saved from a busy highway.
Every year, he called everyone he loved on their birthday to sing “Happy Birthday” over the phone—a simple, heartfelt gesture he became famous for in the family and one that will be deeply missed.
George’s warmth and generosity touched everyone he met. He is survived by his loving children: Samantha B. Tierney of Eliot, Maine; Christine A. Tierney and her husband, Luis J. Blanco, of Boston; and Mark S. Tierney and his wife, Erin Tierney, of Reading. He also leaves behind two siblings, Frances T. Albright and Paul Tierney; four cherished grandchildren: Emily Casaccio and her husband, Sam Casaccio; Austin Weaver; Liam Tierney; and Kira Tierney; one great-grandson, Joseph Casaccio, and his loving partner, Margot Dunn.
He was predeceased by his brother, Martin Leo Tierney, and his sister, Rita Corkery.
Visitation for relatives and friends will be held at the McDonald-Finnegan-Anderson Funeral Home, 322 Main Street, Stoneham on Friday, July 18, from 4 to 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 19, at Saint Patrick’s Church, 71 Central St., Stoneham, followed by interment at the Lindenwood Cemetery, Stoneham.
