Gerardo “Gerry” Camarro, a former longtime resident of East Boston, peacefully passed away on Thursday, June 18, at Brightview Assisted Living in Wakefield.
Gerry was born on January 1, 1936, in Mirabella, Avellino, Italy, to the late Elena (Rosato) and Biagio Camarro. He was also the beloved step-son of Filomena Camarro. Raised in a large and loving family, he spent his early years in Italy until the age of 16, when he courageously emigrated alone to Venezuela. There, he worked as a shoemaker and enjoyed playing soccer for five formative years, supporting his family back home through his hard work and dedication.
Through birthright citizenship, Gerry obtained his U.S. citizenship and eventually settled in East Boston, living with his sister Rosa and brother-in-law Salvatore. While attending night school to learn English, he met Theresa DiStasio, whom he married in 1962. Together, they built a life in East Boston, where they raised their family over six decades. Gerry dedicated 33 years of service as a member of the MBTA carpenters union. A passionate soccer fan and supporter of Boston’s local sports teams, he and his wife frequently traveled to Italy to visit family. Throughout his life, he was an avid flower and vegetable gardener. Gerry’s deep appreciation for life, pleasant demeanor, and patriotism left a lasting impression on all who knew him.
He was the cherished husband of the late Theresa Rose (DiStasio) Camarro, with whom he shared 59 wonderful years of marriage. Gerry was the loving father of Stephen B. Camarro and his wife Pamela of North Reading, and Michael A. Camarro and his fiancée Jennifer Elliott of Danvers. He was the adoring Nonno to Stephen and his wife Jessica, Gabrielle, Nicole, Trevor, and Michael Jr. He is also remembered fondly by his siblings: Elena Sorrentino and her husband Antonio, Luigi Camarro and his wife Francesca, Ida Arinello and her husband Vittorio, Giuseppina DiChiara and her husband Michele, and the late Michele Camarro, Rosa Iapicca, Prisco Camarro, and Pellegrino Camarro. He also leaves countless cousins, nephews, and nieces both in the U.S and Italy.
His Funeral Service will be held in the McDonald Funeral Home, 19 Yale Ave., Wakefield on Wednesday, June 24 at 12pm. Visitation for relatives and friends will be held prior to the service beginning at 10am. Interment, Woodlawn Cemetery, Everett.
