Gloria F. Zappala, 84, of Wakefield, passed away after a brief illness on Sunday, November 8, surrounded by her family, at the Melrose-Wakefield Hospital.
Born in Lynn on July 7, 1925, she was the daughter of the late John and Harriet (Hardy) Dunnigan
Raised in Lynn, she was a graduate of Lynn Classical High School, class of 1943. She was a member of St. Florence Church, Wakefield. For many years, Mr. and Mrs. Zappala owned and operated the Anti-que Shop on Albion Street. They traveled the New England Area, exhibiting antiques and collectibles at shows while searching for "treasures" with their dearest friend Dorothy Freeman. Upon retirement, they made their home at Colonial Point and continued to spend summer vacations in Ogunquit, ME. Mrs. Zappala was active until her recent illness, and cherished time spent with family and friends.
Mrs. Zappala was the widow of Salvatore Zappala and Dennis R. Flynn. She was the mother of Dennis R. Flynn of Wakefield, Susan M. Zappala of Rowley, Marianne E. Zappala of Methuen, Thomas J. Zappala of Stoneham, Lisa M. Zappala of Derry, NH, and the late John J. Flynn. She was the stepmother of Mary F. Paiva of Wakefield, Paul E. Zappala of New York City, Robert Zappala of Billerica, and the late John R. and William J. Zappala. She was the sister of Dennis (Russell) Dunnigan of Brookline, MA. Mrs. Zappala was predeceased by her brothers, George and Lawrence Dunnigan and her sister Gladys Archibald. She was the beloved grandmother of Christopher Zappala, Margaret and Patrick Dingle, Sherri Oliveira and John Flynn. She is also survived by 6 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Her funeral will be held from the McDonald Funeral Home, 19 Yale Ave. Wakefield on Thursday at 10 a.m. followed by a funeral mass in St. Florence Church, 47 Butler Ave., Wakefield at 11 o'clock. Relatives and friends may call at the Funeral Home Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. Interment will be at Forest Glade Cemetery in Wakefield.
