James Calvin Sheppard, age 97, of Wakefield, formerly of Stoneham, passed away peacefully on July 30, 2026 at the Bear Hill Rehab in Wakefield.
He was born in Somerville on November 21, 1928 and was the son of the late John and Florence (Norman) Sheppard. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his five siblings.
Following high school, Mr. Sheppard served in the United States Navy for two years. Upon his return, he went to work and was a proud truck driver for the Teamsters Local 25. In his retirement years, he kept busy by serving as a crossing guard. He was an excellent baker and cook. He was a passionate outdoorsman and loved nature, especially bird watching and fishing. Mr. Sheppard also had a passion for woodworking. His greatest joy was his family of which he was immensely proud.
He was the beloved husband of the late Joan Mildred (Kelley). He was the proud father of Lou Ann Melino and her husband Robert of North Reading, Jay Sheppard and his wife Judy of New Hampshire, Thomas Sheppard of Leominster, Wendy Minton and her husband Robert of Tewksbury and the late John Sheppard. He was the adoring grandfather of Nicole, Robert, Michelle, Ryan, Jaime, Jackie, Collette, Krysten, TJ, Kevin, Madelyn, and Danielle. He is also survived by his 15 great grandchildren.
In honoring James’ wishes, services will be private. Arrangements are in the care of the McDonald-Finnegan-Anderson Funeral Home, Stoneham.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Mass Audubon Society.
