Joseph E. Porter, a longtime resident of Wakefield, passed away peacefully on April 24th, 2025 at the age of 98. He was the son of the late Edgar Porter and Catherine (DeVeau) Porter.
Joe was the devoted husband of the late Helen (Czarnota) Porter of Wakefield of whom he was married for 66 years. He was the brother of the late Blanche Sarno, Anita Gravellese, Mildred Charest and Harold Porter. He is survived by his beloved daughters Gail (Porter) Shevlin and her husband William of Encinitas, California and Susan (Porter) Tracy and her husband Shawn of Danvers. He was the proud grandfather of Nathan Shevlin, Faith Shevlin, Rachel (Shevlin) Hart and Hillary (Tracy) Bergson and Thomas Tracy. He also had seven great-grandchildren.
Joe was educated in the Wakefield school system and pursued his education at Boston Trade School and Franklin Technical Institute.
He enlisted in the Navy during World War II and spent all of his duty in the Pacific operations. He started out as an amphibious craft operator, later being assigned to the USS New Jersey. One of the most memorable moments of his service was transferring Emperor Hirohito and Japanese military officials to an aircraft carrier as part of post-war proceedings where he was present during the signing of the peace treaty.
Following his service Joe started a plumbing business in 1946 and built himself a successful career. He was a hard worker and known for being fair, honest, reliable, and always punctual. His legendary truck was seen around town providing “23 hour service” to his loyal customers.
Joe enjoyed playing pool, golf, poker tournaments in Las Vegas, and traveling the world with his wife Helen. She was the love of his life and his devotion to her never wavered. He was a proud member of the Wakefield Elks where he enjoyed playing cards and made many friendships.
Fond memories include Christmas mornings with family, opening gifts, playing pool with the kids and often surprising them with his quick wit.
A true gentleman, known for his patience and kindness, always willing to lend a helping hand.
He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who had the joy of knowing him.
