Kathryn Winterson, age 81 of Stoneham, passed away on Tuesday June 10 at the CareOne at Lexington.
She was born in Boston on May 22, 1944 and was the daughter of the late George and Kathryn (Wall) Winterson.
Kathy was the beloved sister of Frances Winterson of Taunton, George F. Winterson “Rick” and his wife Emily of Boston and Duxbury, and the late Philip Winterson and his wife Barbara of Russell. She is also survived by 7 nieces and nephews, 15 grand nieces and nephews, and 1 great grandniece. Her nephew and godson Dan Winterson predeceased her.
In her childhood, Kathryn lived in Belmont until she was 5, then grew up and lived in Winchester for the next 42 years until moving to Stoneham. She graduated from Grade 8, St. Mary's in Winchester in 1957. She went on to Matignon High School in Cambridge, graduating in 1961. Her college career included Tuft's University where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1965 and University of Rhode Island, earning a Master's degree in American History. She used that knowledge in a lifelong career teaching American History to juniors at Woburn High School.
Kathy was a dedicated supporter of labor and union causes, working in many capacities for the Woburn Teacher's Association and the Massachusetts Teachers Association. She also dedicated many hours for the Gurnet Saquish beach association conservation efforts. She loved the beach walking, sitting, swimming, playing games. Wherever she lived, getting involved was important to her. At her residence in Stoneham, she was on the Board of Trustees for a decade. Lastly, she was an ardent fan of the Celtics. She rooted for all Boston teams, but she bled green for the Celtics through thick and thin.
Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated in St. Patrick Church, 71 Central Street Stoneham on Wednesday. June 18 at 10:00 AM. Visitation for relatives and friends will be held at the McDonald-Finnegan-Anderson Funeral Home, 322 Main St., Stoneham prior to the Mass from 8:30 -9:30 AM. Interment will be at Wildwood Cemetery, Winchester
