Mary F. Lane

Mary F. Lane, 91, of Wakefield and formerly of Rockport died on Saturday, September 13 at Brightview Senior Living in Wakefield.

Born in Malden on August 11, 1934, she was the daughter of the late William and Margaret (Healy) Lovett.

Mary grew up in Allston in a first-generation Irish family, the 2nd oldest of 12. When she was just 18, her father William passed away and she helped her mother Margaret raise her nine brothers and two sisters, always ready to help and babysit. She graduated from Girls High School in Boston. She was a strong guiding force to her entire family, always encouraging them to study, work hard and live a good life. Mary’s childhood shaped her into a strong, handworker who built a wonderful life with her husband, Daniel Lane.

Mary was very proud of her career and always worked. She held many jobs and loved her job working at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) for many years as the assistant to the dean of the Sloane School of Management.

She raised her three children in Brighton and Reading and eventually moved to her happy place in Rockport. Mary retired and spent over thirty years living in Rockport in her home overlooking the ocean where she spent endless hours enjoying her many beautiful gardens. She was happiest, enjoying her four grandchildren at the 4th of July parade, the town Christmas Pageant, and magical summer weekends at Old Garden Beach, Long Beach, and Good Harbor Beach in Gloucester.

Mary was also a very talented artist and enjoyed painting folk art and unusual glass paintings. She was a very active parishioner at St. Joachim’s in Rockport, singing in the choir for many years. Mary and Dan always walked to the Rockport coffee shop every Sunday after Mass, where they were warmly greeted by the locals.

Except for her family, Mary loved shopping more than anything in the world. She was fabulously fashionable, and would disappear for hours happily hunting for the perfect outfit and matching jewelry. She especially enjoyed her shopping adventures with her sisters Joan and Rita.

Mary loved to travel, visiting Ireland, England, Mexico City, California and cherished her summertime trips to Nantucket, Chatham and Provincetown with her husband and her sisters.

She spent her final years at Brightview Senior Living center in Wakefield.

Mary was the wife of the late Daniel P. Lane. She is survived by her three children: Daniel E. Lane of Jacksonville Beach, FL, Joann M. Johnson of Salem, MA and Maryann T. Dennehy and her husband Terrence of Jacksonville Beach, FL., her four grandchildren: Andrew Johnson, Allyson (Graham) Cartwright, Jacqueline and Michael Dennehy, and her great grandson Owen Cartwright. Sister of five brothers: Patrick (Sandy) Lovett of Framingham, John Lovett of Bedford, NH, James Lovett of Boston, Edward Lovett (Zita) of Wellesley, Thomas Lovett (Karen) of Chelmsford, and her two sisters: Margaret “Rita” Meehan of Hingham and Joan “Lovett” Bayne (Clive) of Mexico City, Mexico, and many beloved nieces and nephews. Mary is predeceased by four brothers: William, Richard, Robert and George Lovett.
