Mary Veronica O’Leary, age 103, passed away at The Residence at Pearl Street in Reading on August 28.
She was born in Everett on May 16, 1922, and was the daughter of the late Charles A. and Nora (Burke) O’Leary. She was the sister of the late James O'Leary, Charles O’Leary, Frances Treinavicz, and Paul O’Leary. She is survived by 12 nieces and nephews and was predeceased by one niece.
Mary was raised in Somerville and was a graduate of St. Clement’s High School of Somerville. She joined the United States Marine Corps and served her country during World War II. Mary took great pride in her Marine Corps services and always saw herself as a Marine. She had spent many years working at the State House in Boston. Mary was a devout catholic and a devoted parishioner of Most Blessed Sacrament Church in Wakefield, spending several years volunteering at the rectory. Mary was deeply loved by her family and was referred to as Auntie Mary by her nieces and nephews and all their friends. She also had a deep love for Hampton Beach, spending years at the family cottage on Nudd Ave.
Mary had been a long-time Wakefield resident before making her home at The Residence at Pearl Street in Reading for the last 15 years. While there, she became very active in the community and she participated in every activity they offered, from cardio drumming to Wii bowling. She was an avid reader of the Boston Globe and was always up on current events.
Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated in St. Agnes Church, 186 Woburn St., Reading on Wednesday, September 3 at 11:30am. Visitation for relatives and friends will be held at the McDonald Funeral Home, 19 Yale Ave., Wakefield prior to the mass from 9:30am-11am. Interment, Oak Grove Cemetery, Medford.
