Matthew Brine Gilmour, age 37, of Melrose and formerly of Holliston, passed away on June 27, 2025 of thymoma, a rare cancer.
Matt is survived by his loving wife, Susie Gilmour of Melrose; and was the cherished son of James and Marilyn Brine Gilmour of Holliston. He was the beloved brother of Joshua Gilmour and his wife, Jennifer Jackman; and the adored uncle of Aidan and Axl Gilmour, his godson, all of Blackstone. Matt is also survived by his uncle, Gary Brine of Gloucester; and his aunt, Jennifer Davis of Plymouth.
Matt was born on July 29, 1987, in Newton. He graduated from Holliston High School in 2005 and received his B.Arch. from the Rensselaer School of Architecture in 2010. He went on to become a licensed architect and a highly respected associate at SmithGroup in Boston. Matt was an avid mountain biker, car enthusiast, and concertgoer—interests he shared with his father, Jim, from an early age. His enthusiasm for driving and cars was sparked by family off-roading trips in their Land Rover Defender. Among the many memories together was a special road trip to Montreal with his father to attend a Formula 1 race in 2024.
Friends and family remember Matt for his infectious sense of humor and unwavering positivity. Matt knew how to make those around him laugh, whether it be old friends or those he just met. He maintained his sense of humor throughout his illness, even telling jokes during his own brain surgery and making the entire operating room laugh.
Matt’s kindness and integrity left a lasting impression on those in his life. He was an exceptionally caring partner to Susie over the 12 years they spent together and was loved by her entire family. He looked forward to vacations down the shore and annual barbecues with them every summer. Matt's mother, Marilyn, treasures all of the birthday and Mother’s Day cards from him over the years because of his care in choosing such thoughtful wording for her. He was a loyal friend to many, nurturing lifelong bonds with those from childhood, college, and his professional life. Matt also had a love for the animals in his life, including his and Susie’s cat, Bonita, and his childhood dogs, Molly, Chelsea, and Broodgie. To Aidan and Axl, Uncle Matt was affectionate and always down to have fun.
He will forever be in our hearts.
Visitations will be held at McDonald Funeral Home,19 Yale Avenue, Wakefield, MA 01880 on his birthday, July 29, 2025, from 4 – 7 PM.
