Richard A. McDowell, age 95, died peacefully at his home in Stoneham on July 30th.
He was born in Medford on March 10, 1930. Son of the late Christopher and Muriel (Lovette) McDowell and was raised in Somerville.
Known affectionately as “Papa” by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, he had a gift for bringing laughter into every room. His sense of humor, especially his endless supply of jokes—many told with a perfectly timed punchline—will be fondly remembered by all who knew him.
He proudly served his country in the United States Army, followed by many years of service to the community as a trusted and familiar mail carrier. Richard was also an avid sports fan, rarely missing a game and always ready to share his opinion on the latest play, score, or team performance.
Richard was predeceased by his beloved wife, Margaret “Peggy” McDowell. One of their favorite traditions was spending the day together in Rockport, Massachusetts. These trips became treasured memories and were a simple but special part of their life together.
He was the devoted father of Donna Sheehan and her husband Edward Sheehan, of Tewksbury, with whom he shared a close and loving bond. He was the proud grandfather of Stacey Toupin and her husband Joseph Toupin of Tyngsborough, Edward Sheehan of Tewksbury, and his former wife Mariah Sheehan, with whom Richard shared a continued and caring relationship, Brian Sheehan and his wife Katelyn Sheehan of Tewksbury and Stephen Sheehan and his wife Alicia Sheehan of Center Barnstead, NH.
Richard was also blessed with many great-grandchildren, each of whom brought him immense pride and joy. He adored being “Papa” to them, cherishing every moment spent in their presence.
He leaves behind a family who adored him and will miss him deeply. Though their hearts are heavy, they are comforted by the legacy of love, laughter, and integrity he leaves behind.
His funeral service will be held at the McDonald-Finnegan-Anderson Funereal Home, 322 Main St., Stoneham on Monday August 11, at 12 p.m. Visitation for relatives and friends will be held at the funeral home prior to the service from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
