Richard F. Sweeney, Sr.

Richard F. Sweeney, Sr. of Wakefield passed away on Thursday, March 12, 2026 at the age of 80, with his family by his side. Dick Sweeney was born in Winchester, MA on December 31, 1945. He was the son of the late Daniel J. Sweeney, Sr. and Bernice (Branch) Sweeney.

Dick was the former Postmaster in Burlington, MA, retiring in 2002.

Mr. Sweeney is survived by his wife of fifty-six years, Joan (Bradley) Sweeney of Wakefield, his son, Richard F. Sweeney, Jr., and his wife Kelley of Gloucester and his son Timothy W. Sweeney and his wife Maureen of Wakefield.

He is also survived by his grandchildren Kaitlin R. Sweeney and Aidan J. Sweeney both of Gloucester, and Caileigh P. Sweeney and Patrick R. Sweeney, both of Wakefield.

Mr. Sweeney was the brother of Daniel J. Sweeney, Jr and his wife Judith of Burlington, Elaine Clarke and her husband Robert of Dighton, Darilyn Lydeard and her husband John of Lincoln, R. I. and Deborah Sciaba of Westwood. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.

His Funeral Mass will be celebrated in St. Patrick Church, 71 Central St., Stoneham, MA on Thursday, March 19, 2026 at 10:00 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Following the Mass, interment will be at Lakeside Cemetery, North Avenue, Wakefield, MA. Arrangements are in the care of the McDonald Funeral Home, Wakefield.
