The Reverend Canon Edward Hin Cho Ho entered into the nearer presence of God on his 102nd birthday, January 13, 2026, at Burlington Lahey Hospital.
Fr. Ho was born on January 13, 1924, in Hong Kong, the seventh of twelve children, to Wing Siu Ho and Lo Lin. During his teenage years, he began to discern a call to ordained ministry, a vocation he later pursued through studies at Guangdong Union Theological Seminary, from which he graduated in 1957. His vocational path was profoundly disrupted by the onset of the Cultural Revolution, during which churches and seminaries were shuttered and public expressions of Christian faith were suppressed. Despite these hardships—including periods of imprisonment—Fr. Ho remained steadfast in his faith, living out the Gospel through acts of service, compassion, and quiet witness, whether in forced hard labor or while teaching at Sun Yat-sen University.
In 1988, after decades of faithful perseverance, Fr. Ho was ordained to the priesthood at St. Paul’s Cathedral, Boston, by the late Rt. Rev. Bishop Johnson.
Throughout his ministry, Fr. Ho served congregations in the Anglican Church of Our Savior in Guangzhou, China; St. Mark’s Church in Hong Kong; The Episcopal Diocese of San Joaquin in Fresno, California (ministry for Cambodian and Laotian refugees); St. Paul’s Cathedral, Boston; and, following his retirement, at St. Paul’s Church in Malden. He was known for his compassionate pastoral care, thoughtful preaching, and deep devotion to the Church and its sacraments. His ministry was marked by humility, faithfulness, and a steadfast commitment to proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ—often more through action than words, especially during times when speaking openly about faith was not possible.
Fr. Ho’s ministry extended well beyond the walls of the church. His home was always open to congregants, young people, and college students, offering hospitality, encouragement, and guidance. He had a deep love for music and could often recite entire hymns and cherished songs from memory, reflecting a lifelong joy in worship.
Fr. Ho is survived by his beloved wife, Isabel; his children, Logos, Mark and wife Lorraine Chung, and Cecil; his grandchildren, Nathan and Magdalene; and the many faithful whose lives were enriched by his priestly ministry and gentle witness.
A Funeral Service will be celebrated at St. Paul’s Cathedral, Boston, on January 21, 2026, at 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow at Puritan Lawn Memorial Park, 185 Lake Street, Peabody.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul’s Church, Lynnfield, in thanksgiving for a life of faithful service.
Rev.
