Virginia L. McMahon

Virginia L. McMahon, age 90 of Reading, MA, died on Tuesday September 15, 2026. She was born in New York City on July 30, 1936 and was the only child of the late Robert and Elizabeth (Liverman) Desnew.

Ginny was raised in New York City and attended catholic high school, and then studied nursing at St. Vincent’s School of Nursing in Manhattan. She went on to earn her Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing from Boston College. She met and married the love of her life, James M. McMahon, and they enjoyed 61 years together. Ginny worked as a nurse at many hospitals including Mass General, Beth Israel and New England Memorial. She finished out her career as a visiting nurse at Easter Seals VNA. Ginny and Jim raised four daughters in Reading. As a family, they enjoyed many fun vacations together skiing in the winters and spending time at Cape Cod in the summers. Ginny enjoyed many activities including tennis and aerobics, and remained very active well into her late 80’s. In her retirement, she spent many years traveling and enjoyed spending winters in Florida - primarily in Naples with Jim and their family. Ginny was a phenomenal baker, and always loved to go shopping with her daughters. She also enjoyed spending many precious moments with her five grandchildren.

Ginny was a loving, strong and confident woman who was very independent, and because of these attributes was a great role model for her daughters. She was adventurous, fun, and didn’t hesitate to go to new places and enjoy life. Ginny was an amazing mother, grandmother and friend who often made all around her laugh. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Ginny was the loving wife of the late James M. McMahon. She was the beloved mother of Mary DeRosa and her husband Brian of Berkley, Virginia Bonish and her husband John of Wilmington, Theresa Chorlian and her husband Henry of Rhode Island, and Kathleen Lapery and her husband Gregory of Stoneham. Ginny was the cherished grandmother of Scott Bonish, James Bonish, Stephen Bonish, Sara Lapery, and Meghan Lapery.

Ginny’s Funeral Mass will be celebrated in St. Patrick' Church, 71 Central St, Stoneham on Monday, September 21, 2026 at 10 a.m. followed by a burial service at St Patrick's Cemetery in Stoneham. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Jude’s or the charity of your choice.
