Walter J. Penney Jr., age 89, of Cambridge and Stoneham, peacefully departed this world surrounded by family on Wednesday August 9th. He will be remembered by his family and friends for his great personality, good humor, and kind generosity.
Born on February 26, 1934, in Everett, MA, Walter was the son of the late Walter J. Penney Sr. and the late Ann (Butler) Penney. He was raised in Cambridge and was a proud graduate of Cambridge High & Latin School. His journey of service and commitment began in 1953 when he answered the call of duty and joined the United States Army, valiantly serving for two years including during the Korean War. His selflessness and dedication to his country were emblematic of his character.
After returning from his military service, fate intervened and led Walter to a New Hampshire Resort where live bands and dancing thrived. He caught the eye of Catherine R. (Pesaturo) Penney, and their first dance marked the beginning of a love story that would span a lifetime. Walter and Catherine were married three years later and established homes in Malden and Stoneham where they lovingly raised three children.
Walter's legacy lives on through the lives he touched. He is survived by his beloved wife Catherine R. (Pesaturo) Penney, a partner in love and life. His memory is cherished by his devoted children: Jan (Penney) Fleming and her husband Daniel of Stoneham, Joseph Penney and his wife Christine of Stoneham, and John Penney and his wife Cherylyn of Stoneham. Walter's spirit also lives on through his grandchildren: Joseph and his wife Raisa, Alyssa, Jarred, Justin, and Janelle Penney. Additionally, his legacy extends to his great-grandchildren, Camden, and Joseph Penney, who will carry his spirit into the future. He was the beloved brother of the late Mary (Penney) Coady of Somerville and Barbara (Penney) McSheffrey of Waltham. Walter is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Walter had a long and successful career at Commonwealth Gas and Electric Company. After 36 years of service, he retired in 1996 marking the beginning of a new chapter in which he reveled in the warmth of family and the excitement of sports and travel. A true adventurer at heart, Walter embarked on countless journeys, relishing cherished vacations alongside his beloved wife Catherine, their children, and a close-knit group of friends.
As we bid farewell to Walter J. Penney Jr., we remember his indomitable spirit, his zest for life, and his boundless love for family and friends. His legacy of laughter, joy, and kindness will forever live on in the hearts of those who were privileged to know him.
